Tonight me and Khalilah went to see this movie called "Wristcutters: A Love Story." It was a dark comedy about what happens to people who commit suicide and their quest to find their way through "life on the other side." The lead guy spends the whole movie looking for his girlfriend who also killed herself, and he meets up with another girl who’s looking for "the people in charge." If this sounds weird, it was weird. But it was very good. Maybe not the greatest movie ever, but it was very artistic. It was loaded with spiritual metaphors and references to God, heaven and hell. But I can only imagine that the filmmakers were probably trying to make a statement that there is no God, there is no heaven and there is no hell. Yeah, one of those movies.
It never ceases to amaze me how people can create such amazing works of art about hopelessness and despair, and they can be so good. I pray that one day I’ll make a quirky, art-house movie that’s a smash yet doesn’t compromise the message of hope and truth.
